What do Kp numbers mean? The Kp number is a system of measuring aurora strength. It goes from 0 to 9 (0 being very weak, 9 being a major geomagnetic storm with strong auroras visible). So when your looking at the aurora forecast page, you want to see high Kp numbers. The higher the better.

Kp stands for the equilibrium partial pressure. It is defined as the partial pressures of the gasses inside a closed system. It is used to express the relationship between product pressures and reactant pressures. It is a unitless number, although it relates the pressures.

Kc and Kpare only affected by temperature. The quotient changes due to change in concentration etc. but it adjusts to keep Kpand Kc constant. That is why the equilibrium position changes. So if you add more of the product the top line of the quotient increases and so doesthe value of the whole quotient. Likewise, does KP change with temperature?
