The three most common measures of spread or variability are the range, the interquartile range (IQR), and the standard deviation (SD). The range of a list is the largest value minus the smallest value. It is the width of the smallest interval that contains all the data, so it measures spread.

The IQR is the length of the box on a boxplot. Notice that only a few numbers are needed to determine the IQR and those numbers are not the extreme observations that may be outliers. The IQR is a type of resistant measure. The second measure of spread or variation is called the standard deviation (SD).

Measures of spread (also called measures of dispersion) tell you something about how wide the set of data is. There are several basic measures of spread used in statistics.
