Nausea and vomiting Low-grade fever Weakness and fatigue Abdominal fullness and tenderness Loss of appetite Mental confusion Kidney and liver failure Occurs due to liver damage caused by the production of a toxic metabolite of alcohol called acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde triggers inflammation of the liver by damaging cell membranes. Alcohol interferes with the fluidity of the cell membrane Other toxic metabolites are superoxides and hydroperoxides which cause oxidative injury of hepatocytes (hepatic cells) The risk factors include: Gender - women are more likely to develop alcoholic hepatitis Obesity Binge drinking High blood pressure Jaundice - yellowing of the eyes and skin caused by the liver’s inability to get rid of bilirubin Ascites - fluid accumulation in the abdomen Liver cirrhosis - irreversible scarring of the liver tissue Kidney failure - caused by abnormal blood flow to the kidneys Hepatic encephalopathy - confusion and slurred speech caused by a build-up of toxins in the brain
